Legal Practitioner urges businesses to secure intellectual property early

Kwasi Gyamfi Boadu, a legal practitioner, has stressed the importance of early intellectual property registration for businesses, warning that failure to do so can result in losing control of their brand names and costly legal challenges.
He noted that many businesses overlook intellectual property registration in their early stages, only to face serious consequences later. Some are even forced to abandon their brand identities after discovering that their brand names are legally owned by other entities.
In today’s competitive business environment, intellectual property has become one of the most valuable assets for companies. IP includes trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets, all of which help protect a brand’s identity, products, and innovations. Despite its importance, many startups and small businesses in Ghana and beyond delay or ignore the process of registering their IP.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed FM on Monday, June 2, 2025, Lawyer Boadu emphasized the importance of securing intellectual property rights early. According to him, doing so can help businesses avoid costly legal battles and protect their investments.
“It’s critical that entrepreneurs and business owners take intellectual property seriously from the onset. Neglecting this step can lead to unnecessary court cases and the painful loss of your brand,” he said.
He encouraged businesses to pay attention to intellectual property, emphasizing that the process is straightforward and affordable.
