Van Vicker urges safety reforms in African film industry

Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has called for urgent improvements in safety protocols on African film sets following reports that Nigerian actor Godwin Nnadiekwe was hospitalized after an accidental kick from fellow actor Zubby Michael during a movie shoot.

In a social media statement, Van Vicker described the incident as “extremely disquieting” and criticized the lack of basic safety measures in many productions. He stressed the importance of rehearsing physical scenes, especially in an industry where actors often work without insurance, stunt doubles, or safety equipment.

“Rehearsal cannot be downplayed for ‘great’ acting, time limitations, etc., especially in the absence of safety harnesses. Acting in action scenes or violent scenes can be precarious,” the actor noted.

He added that rehearsals not only protect actors but also shield producers from negligence claims, urging industry stakeholders to treat the incident as a warning and push for reforms.

“What’s the fate of the actor when there is zero rigging to protect them in perilous moments?” the actor questioned. “Our industry’s growth isn’t just about better cameras or acting—it must include protecting the people who make films possible,” he added.
