200 Transformers coming to curb power outages – Energy Minister

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to urgently deploy 200 new transformers across major urban centres to enhance power distribution and address recent supply challenges.

This follows growing concerns over intermittent power outages affecting households and industries. The deployment is expected to ease pressure on overloaded infrastructure and meet Ghana’s rising electricity demand.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed government’s commitment to reliable and efficient power delivery.

“Despite the challenges, Ghana’s power generation remains stable, and we continue to export power to neighbouring countries.

“But we must also strengthen our transmission and distribution systems to ensure consistent supply,” he said.  Mr. Jinapor added: “In this regard, I have granted approval to ECG to inject about 200 new transformers into our major capital cities. This will help us not just generate power, but also transmit and distribute it effectively and efficiently.”
