Supreme Court clears way for impeachment probe against CJ Torkornoo
The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed an interlocutory injunction application filed by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, clearing the way for a committee probing her possible removal from office to proceed.
In a ruling on Wednesday, May 28, a five-member panel led by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie found no merit in Justice Torkornoo’s attempt to stop the committee set up by President John Mahama under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
This came just hours after the same court struck out portions of a supplementary affidavit she filed, ruling that it breached Article 146(8) by revealing confidential committee proceedings.
Justice Torkornoo had asked the court to halt the committee’s work and bar Supreme Court Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu from participating. She also wanted the presidential suspension order set aside until her main challenge was heard. But the court disagreed. This marks another blow to the Chief Justice’s legal fight, after several similar challenges by other parties were also thrown out. The committee can now resume its hearings while the main case remains pending.
