Cedi gains: Mahama hails GPRTU, pressures others to slash prices

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for lowering transport fares in response to the recent appreciation of the cedi.

He is also urging other businesses to follow suit by reducing prices to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit on Monday, May 26, 2025, President Mahama urged the private sector to reflect the cedi’s recent gains in their pricing structures as a show of support for government efforts to restore macroeconomic stability.

“I want to commend those of you [businesses] who have responded to the cedi’s appreciation by reducing prices of your products and services,” Mr. Mahama said, while encouraging others to pass the benefits of the stronger currency on to customers and consumers.

“Let us [businesses] pass on some of these reliefs to Ghanaians,” he urged.

The President reserved special praise for GPRTU, describing its fare reduction as a timely and socially responsive gesture amid ongoing recovery efforts.

President Mahama added: “GPRTU, thank you very much. And to those who haven’t yet adjusted prices, please do.”

The summit, held under the theme ‘Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy,’ brought together CEOs, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss Ghana’s economic path forward.
