Lil Win’s coup movie sparks debate

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has ignited nationwide debate with the announcement of his latest project — The Last African Hero, a biopic centered on Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The actor, widely known for his comedic roles and growing influence in Kumawood, released a teaser for the film on May 21, 2025. The short trailer, posted on his official YouTube channel, quickly went viral and triggered mixed reactions from Ghanaians and beyond. The film stars Lil Win in the lead role, with rising actress Janet Brefo Yankson, also known as Sweet Mimi, playing a supporting character.

Traoré, a controversial figure, rose to power in September 2022 after leading a military coup that ousted Burkina Faso’s interim government. Since then, he has become a prominent figure in Pan-African discourse — admired by some for his anti-imperialist stance and criticized by others for his undemocratic rise to power.

The biopic aims to capture his political journey, ideological stance, and role in shaping a new narrative of leadership in West Africa. However, its announcement has sparked sharp criticism from sections of the public and political analysts, who fear the film could romanticize military coups and undermine democratic values.

“While art has the freedom to tell any story, glorifying a coup leader can send the wrong message, especially in a region already facing political instability,” one critic noted on social media.
Others have praised the project as bold and timely. “This is not just a movie. It’s a cultural statement,” said one supporter. “Lil Win is showing Africa that we must own our heroes — even the controversial ones.”

Lil Win has yet to address the backlash directly, but insiders suggest the film is intended to provoke thought rather than promote any political agenda.

This isn’t the first time the Kumawood actor has surprised fans with a dramatic shift in content. Known for blending humor with social commentary, Lil Win has increasingly taken on more serious roles, positioning himself as a filmmaker with depth and ambition.
