Chaotic mornings raise stress, lower focus — Psychologist

By Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Psychologist Justice Ocloo is urging individuals to take charge of their mornings, highlighting that how we begin our day can significantly impact focus, stress levels, mental health, and overall productivity.

Speaking on Zed FM’s Business Breakfast show, Mr. Ocloo described mastering the morning as a key pillar of a healthy lifestyle.

“The way a person begins their day has a significant impact on their physical health, emotional well-being, and overall productivity,” he said. “If we do not learn to master our morning, if we do not learn to plan our day from that early period, it becomes very difficult for us to focus.”

He explained that a consistent and intentional morning routine helps regulate stress levels, improve mental clarity, and set a positive tone for the day.

Mr. Ocloo also highlighted that the kind of morning one experiences often depends on their responsibilities and daily demands. He pointed out the physiological effects of chaotic mornings, noting that stress hormone levels, particularly cortisol, can spike when the day begins in disorder, leading to reduced productivity and emotional strain.

“When you wake up disorganized, sad, or demoralized, it can lead to stress and if not managed properly, that stress can impact your mental health and even worsen pre-existing conditions,” he said.

Mr. Ocloo called for greater awareness and education, stressing that access to the right knowledge can help individuals work smarter, not harder.
