Chaotic mornings spike stress hormone, affect productivity – Psychologist

By Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Psychologist Justice Ocloo is urging individuals to take control of their mornings, emphasizing that how we begin each day can significantly influence our focus, mental health, stress levels, and overall productivity.

Speaking on the Business Breakfast Show on Zed FM, Mr. Ocloo described “mastering the morning” as a key pillar of a healthy and productive lifestyle. He noted that a consistent and intentional morning routine enhances mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical well-being throughout the day.

“If we do not learn to master our morning—if we don’t plan our day from that early period—it becomes very difficult for us to focus,” he said. “A rough start can affect how we relate with others and even worsen existing mental health conditions.”

Mr. Ocloo explained that the kind of morning a person experiences is often shaped by their responsibilities and daily demands. He warned that chaotic mornings could trigger a spike in cortisol—the body’s primary stress hormone—leading to reduced productivity and emotional strain.

“When you wake up disorganized, sad, or demoralized, it can lead to stress,” he noted. “And if that stress isn’t managed properly, it can impact your mental health and aggravate pre-existing conditions.”

Citing research, Mr. Ocloo said establishing a structured morning routine helps regulate stress, improve focus, and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. He also called for increased public awareness and education on mental health and stress management. According to him, having access to the right knowledge and tools can empower individuals to work smarter, not harder.
