Transport fares to drop soon as Cedi strengthens – GPRTU

Transport Union (GPRTU) begins final talks with the Ministry of Transport, following the recent appreciation of the cedi against the dollar.

The Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed in a media interview on Monday, May 19, that discussions with the Ministry are at an advanced stage. A final meeting is expected on Tuesday, May 20, to conclude the talks.

“It was a marathon meeting. The Transport Ministry is proposing a certain percentage, and the transport operators are also proposing theirs. Eventually, we met halfway. We’re returning for a final meeting tomorrow to finalize the decision,” he said.

He emphasized that the ongoing talks focus on reducing fares in response to the cedi’s gains and assured commuters that they can expect some financial relief. “The meeting is about reducing fares, so the public should be rest assured we are committed to giving them a meaningful reduction,” Mr. Moro added.
