Comfortable workspaces boost mental health, productivity – Expert says

Clinical Psychologist Dr. Newman Arthur has emphasized the critical link between the workplace environment and employee mental health, calling on employers to create spaces that foster psychological well-being and productivity.
According to Dr. Arthur, the physical setup of an office ranging from cleanliness and décor to the overall atmosphere has a profound impact on how employees feel and perform.
He explained that the human brain constantly interacts with its surroundings, and a cluttered or chaotic environment can negatively affect concentration.
“Our brain interacts with the environment and picks up everything. That’s why when people go on retreats at a hotel, they tend to feel better and even come up with innovative ideas because a comfortable environment helps with productivity,” Dr. Arthur said.
Dr. Arthur encouraged organizations to be intentional about office design, noting that simple additions such as flowers, artwork, and organized workspaces can significantly improve employee satisfaction and output.
He also highlighted the importance of workplace culture and leadership behavior. He warned that toxic interactions such as managers shouting at staff or ignoring employee welfare can severely impact morale and productivity.
“If they come in and everything is all over the place, it affects their productivity,” he added.
He further stated that relationships, workplace culture, and the physical environment significantly influence employee performance. Dr. Arthur therefore called on businesses to prioritize mental health and well-being as a core part of organizational success, especially in high-pressure and fast-paced industries.
