Parliament to Reconvene on May 27

Parliament is set to resume sittings later this month, following an official notice issued by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. In a press statement released from his office on Monday, May 12, the Speaker announced that the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic will commence on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The session will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the Chamber of Parliament House, located in Accra.

The announcement was made in accordance with Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, which requires the Speaker to give prior notice to Members of Parliament (MPs) and the public about upcoming parliamentary sessions. The reconvening of Parliament signals the end of the recess period and the return to legislative business, including the consideration of bills, motions, reports, and other matters of national interest.

The upcoming meeting is expected to be particularly significant, as Parliament will likely address a number of pressing national issues that have emerged during the break. These may include economic recovery strategies, updates on the implementation of the 2025 national budget, legislative proposals from various ministries, and oversight reports from parliamentary committees.

Additionally, with only a few months remaining in the calendar year, MPs are expected to intensify work on pending bills and policy discussions. This includes reviewing amendments to existing laws, debating new legislative initiatives, and performing their core oversight functions on the executive branch. The performance of Parliament during this session will be closely monitored by civil society organizations, the media, and the general public, particularly in light of growing calls for greater transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance. Members of Parliament are therefore expected to report for duty well-prepared to engage in constructive debate and representation of their constituencies. The Speaker has emphasized the importance of punctuality and active participation, underscoring the need for Parliament to continue serving as a pillar of democratic governance.
