Allocate Budget Before Starting School Projects – Education Committee Tells Government
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has called on the government to ensure that adequate budgetary allocations are made before the commencement of educational infrastructure projects, warning that the current approach often leads to delays and resource wastage.
Chairman of the committee, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, made the appeal during a working visit to several educational institutions in the Eastern Region, including Ghana Senior High School, Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and All Nations University, on Sunday, May 11. The visit formed part of the committee’s assessment of the double-track system’s impact across senior high schools.
“Going forward, I think we should have a budget for projects before we start—so that we don’t waste public money or resources,” Nortsu-Kotoe stated.
He emphasized that pre-allocated funding would go a long way in addressing the chronic infrastructure deficits in schools that continue to hamper effective teaching and learning.
The committee chairman also commended school authorities for their efforts in managing limited resources and assured them that their concerns had been noted. He said the committee would relay these issues to the executive arm of government for redress.
Deputy Ranking Member of the committee, Mustapha Ussif, also lauded both school management and students for their performance and urged them to sustain the momentum.
“We’re impressed with the government’s performance and the students,” Ussif said. The committee’s visit underscores the growing urgency to streamline planning and financing in the education sector as schools grapple with overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and the operational pressures of the double-track system.
