Government Inaugurates Task Force to Establish New National Airline

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has inaugurated a 10-member task force to oversee the establishment of a new national airline, a key step in Ghana’s efforts to revive its aviation industry.
Chaired by Charles Asare, former Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the task force has been tasked with developing a comprehensive operational framework for the airline. Their responsibilities include identifying potential strategic and technical partners and proposing a sustainable business model that will make the carrier competitive regionally and internationally.
Mr. Nikpe said the new airline would be built on existing aviation infrastructure and serve as a symbol of national pride. He noted that the government is determined to avoid the missteps that led to the collapse of Ghana Airways, once a prominent carrier in West Africa.
“There are already players in the aviation sector,” he said, “and we are going to compete with them.” He expressed confidence in the team’s expertise and the possibility of success despite the challenges facing national carriers across the continent.
The Minister also acknowledged past failures but insisted the government is committed to a different approach this time—one rooted in sound business practices and long-term planning.
“We want to engage in this enterprise and engage in it very well with all the business sense that will guide us,” Mr. Nikpe said.
The move to re-establish a national airline aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen its transport sector and expand its role as a hub for West African air travel. The task force is expected to deliver its initial proposals in the coming months.
