Apple Eyes AI-Powered Future for Safari, Threatening Google’s Search Dominance

Apple is reportedly exploring a major shift in its Safari web browser by integrating AI-powered search engines, a move that could significantly disrupt Google’s long-held dominance in the search market. According to Bloomberg News, the tech giant is “actively looking at” reshaping Safari’s search capabilities to align with the growing user preference for artificial intelligence tools.

The revelation came to light during testimony from Apple executive Eddy Cue in the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google’s parent company, Alphabet. Cue stated that Safari searches declined for the first time last month—a trend he attributed to users increasingly opting for AI-driven alternatives.

Currently, Google holds the prized position of default search engine on Safari, a deal that reportedly brings Apple around $20 billion annually—roughly 36% of Google’s search advertising revenue generated through Apple’s browser. However, the rise of AI competitors like OpenAI and Perplexity AI is threatening to shake up that lucrative arrangement.

In what could signal a strategic pivot, Apple has already partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri. Meanwhile, Google is racing to finalize a deal by mid-year to embed its Gemini AI technology into Apple’s latest devices.

The potential reshuffle in the search engine hierarchy had immediate market repercussions. Alphabet’s shares fell 6%, while Apple’s dropped about 2% following the report. Neither Apple, Google, nor the U.S. Department of Justice responded to media inquiries on the matter.

Cue also suggested that AI search platforms could eventually surpass traditional engines like Google, hinting that Apple may offer OpenAI and Perplexity as Safari search options in the near future. If realized, Apple’s AI-focused revamp of Safari could mark a turning point in how users access information online—and who profits from it.
