At Long Last…..

At long last, a line has been drawn in the sand. President Mahama’s unveiling of a Code of Conduct for government appointees is not just another bureaucratic ritual, it is a challenge to the very culture of impunity that has eaten deep into the fabric of public office. For far too long, political appointments have become passports to unchecked privilege and personal gain. That era has been served notice. By tying continued appointment to compliance with asset declaration within a clearly stated deadline, the President is not merely issuing a directive. He is laying down a test of integrity. Fail to declare your assets, and you forfeit your office. Period!

Also, the tone from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah buttressed the point even more. His warning to appointees was stern and unequivocal: this code is not optional, and anyone who ignores it must prepare to lose their position. Such resolve from the seat of power is rare but necessary.

The new code covers not just asset declaration but wider ethical behavior conflicts of interest, responsible use of power, and conduct both in public and private spheres. It is a reminder that public office is not an avenue for personal enrichment, but a call to serve with humility and honor.

The code is a strong start. But it is only as powerful as its enforcement. If this administration wants to be remembered for restoring dignity to public office, this is the moment to act. The people are watching. And this time, there must be results.
