Government Pledges to Support Journalists and Embrace AI Responsibly
As nations across the globe observed World Press Freedom Day yesterday, the Government of Ghana reaffirmed its dedication to protecting journalists, defending press freedom, and encouraging the responsible use of technology in media.
The national event, held at the Ghana International Press Centre and organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), brought together media professionals, policymakers, and students under the theme:
“Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
Delivering the keynote address, the Minister responsible for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu declared, “We are firmly committed to upholding press freedom, protecting journalists, and supporting the responsible use of technology in the media.”
He highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in journalism and urged media professionals to embrace the change with discernment.
“Artificial intelligence can revolutionize the way we gather, produce, and distribute news,” he said. “But it must be guided by professionalism, truth, and a firm ethical compass.”
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized the need for the media to evolve with the times while maintaining high standards.
“Journalists must rise to the occasion by adapting to emerging technologies while remaining true to the principles of accurate and responsible reporting.”
Throughout the event, other speakers echoed the minister’s sentiments, stressing the importance of innovation alongside accountability. Representatives from academia and civil society called on journalists to view AI as a tool to improve storytelling, verification, and audience engagement—not a threat to the profession.
The President of the GJA, addressing the gathering, said, “We must protect the space in which journalists operate. Press freedom is not negotiable, and we will continue to demand the highest level of safety and respect for all media professionals.”
World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on May 3, serves as a moment to reflect on the essential role of a free press in democratic societies and assess the global state of media independence and journalist safety. As Ghana navigates its digital future, the country’s press remains a vital instrument for informing citizens, shaping public opinion, and safeguarding democracy.
