Newmont Ghana Champions Inclusion With Cultural, Gender Equity And Wellness Initiatives

In 2025, Newmont’s operations in Ghana showcased a living example of its commitment to inclusion, transforming its sites into vibrant spaces of cultural expression, gender advocacy, and community connection. With themed activities aligned to national and international observances, the mining giant illustrated how diversity and inclusion are not just values on paper—but practices embedded into everyday work life.

The year’s inclusion initiatives kicked off in February with Ghana’s National Chocolate Day. Organized by Newmont’s Women and Allies (W&A) Business Resource Group (BRG), employees at the Ahafo, Akyem, and Accra sites received locally produced chocolate bars—a small yet powerful gesture of care and appreciation that reinforced a sense of belonging and shared culture.

For International Women’s Day on March 8, Newmont embraced the 2025 global theme, “Accelerate Action,” and went beyond symbolic gestures. The company hosted panels, shared employee stories, and spotlighted female employees in its “Women in Newmont” digital campaign, amplifying the voices of women in operations and leadership roles.

A particularly touching initiative was the “Returning Mother’s Ceremony” at Ahafo North, held to warmly welcome mothers back from maternity leave—recognizing the dual roles of caregivers and professionals. Further reinforcing this support, a new lactation room was commissioned at Ahafo South’s Subika Underground site, offering nursing mothers a private and dignified space at work.

In tandem with Ghana’s Independence and Cultural Awareness Month, March became a period of deep cultural engagement at Newmont. Led by a keynote address from historian Dr. Kwaku Darko Ankrah, employees explored the richness of Ghana’s oral traditions, languages, and indigenous heritage.

Team members participated in inter-site cultural quizzes, proverb sessions, and traditional attire showcases, culminating in “Market Days” where operational sites transformed into lively traditional markets. Employees wore colorful Ghanaian attire and shared reflections on their cultural roots, turning the workplace into a visual celebration of unity in diversity.

Newmont is clear that these initiatives are not one-off events. With supportive policies for parents, dedicated spaces for nursing mothers, and employee resource groups driving equity from within, the company continues to embed inclusion into its operations.

By turning observances into educational and community-building moments, Newmont reaffirms its pledge to make the workplace safe, respectful, and empowering for everyone—regardless of gender, culture, or role. As 2025 unfolds, Newmont remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that every employee feels seen, heard, and valued—and that inclusion is not just a goal, but a way of doing business.
