The Head of the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Abena Yeboah-Banin, has urged Ghanaian businesses to prioritize building brand loyalty as a key strategy for long-term sustainability.
Brand loyalty has consistently proven to be a driving force behind business success. It enables companies to grow, remain competitive, and weather economic challenges. Loyal customers often become brand advocates, promoting products and services through word-of-mouth to friends, family, and their online networks.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed, Professor Yeboah-Banin indicated that businesses aiming for a sustainable future must be deliberate in cultivating trust and loyalty among their customers.
“If people can trust you, they can afford to be loyal to you,” she stated.
Professor Yeboah-Banin noted that earning customer trust significantly boosts the chances of developing long-term loyalty.
“You need to have people who are repeat buyers, repeat users or people who used your services yesterday, and when they think of it two years from now, your name comes up by default because you deliver what they’re looking for,” she explained.
She further stressed the importance of consistency in meeting customer expectations, stating that loyal customers are the bedrock of any business’s future.
“If you have loyal customers, your organization has a future,” she asserted.
Professor Yeboah-Banin advised businesses to differentiate themselves and carve out a unique niche in the market. She noted that it’s not enough to make promises, rather brands must deliver on the expectations they’ve created in the minds of customers.
She also highlighted the importance of authenticity, explaining that customers should be able to clearly experience the quality a business promises.
“You lose loyal customers if your services are inconsistent and cannot be trusted,” she cautioned. Professor Yeboah-Banin encouraged businesses to embrace multiple platforms for customer engagement. She recommended leveraging both online and offline channels to strengthen connections with customers and reinforce brand loyalty.
