E-Levy, betting tax, and emissions tax officially scrapped
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says that the repeal of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax will take effect at midnight tonight, following President John Dramani Mahama’s signing of new legislative bills into law.
“The necessary directives have been issued, and effective midnight, there will be no deductions for the E-Levy, betting tax, or emissions tax,” the official stated.
This repeal marks the fulfilment of a major campaign promise made by Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections, granting the long-held wish of millions of Ghanaians who have protested against these levies since their introduction.
Earlier on Wednesday, April 2, President John Dramani Mahama, assented to the bill that abolishes the Betting Tax and other levies including the Emissions Tax and Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).
This development comes on the back of Dr. Forson presenting the bill to abolish the aforementioned levies to the Ninth Parliament in Ghana’s Fourth Republic in March, 2025 While in opposition, Mahama and the NDC vowed to abolish what they termed as “nuisance taxes.” The E-Levy, introduced in 2022, was widely criticised for increasing the cost of mobile money and digital transactions. Likewise, the betting tax and emissions tax faced significant resistance from industry players and the general public.
