Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Genetic Biocontrol in Malaria Fight

Ghana is strengthening its biosafety frameworks and advancing genetic biocontrol technologies to combat malaria and enhance public health, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has said.
Speaking at the 2nd Global Congress on Genetic Biocontrol Technologies in Accra, Dr. Muhammed pledged Ghana’s commitment to collaborating with international researchers and regulatory bodies to explore gene drive research as a tool for malaria control.
“The burden of malaria cases in Africa, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, remains high. Despite numerous interventions, it continues to be one of Ghana’s major causes of mortality and morbidity,” he stated. “I am extremely proud that our research scientists at the University of Ghana and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) are working with global counterparts to explore genetic solutions for malaria transmission.”
Advancing Biosafety and Regulatory Frameworks
The Congress, hosted in Ghana, brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss genetic biocontrol as a tool for managing diseases and environmental challenges. Dr. Muhammed highlighted the crucial role of Ghana’s National Biosafety Authority and the African Genetic Biocontrol Consortium in ensuring informed and transparent decision-making in biotechnology regulation.
“This Congress provides a platform to identify capacity-building needs and explore strategies to strengthen regulatory frameworks both regionally and internationally,” he noted.
Dr. Muhammed also commended the National Biosafety Authorities in Africa, particularly Ghana, for their diligence in creating a conducive environment for regulating and guiding the development of genetic biocontrol technologies. He acknowledged the guidelines produced by Ghana’s Biosafety Authority as a valuable resource for stakeholders and emphasized the importance of collaborative partnerships with other regulatory agencies.
Harnessing Genetic Biocontrol for Disease and Environmental Management
Dr. Willy Tonui, Founder and Executive Director of the African Genetic Biocontrol Consortium, described genetic biocontrol as a transformative tool for addressing public health and environmental challenges.
“Ghana is one country that adopts knowledge quickly and builds capacity in unique ways, which makes it an ideal host for this important discussion,” Dr. Tonui stated.
He explained that gene drive technology, which is currently in laboratory testing, shows promise in controlling malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. He stressed that the participation of Ghanaian institutions in global collaborations is crucial to ensuring Africa plays a leading role in developing and implementing such innovations.
Dr. Tonui further called for strengthening institutional biosecurity, noting that while many African countries have biosafety authorities experienced in regulating genetically modified (GM) crops, expanding their expertise to include genetically modified organisms such as mosquitoes is crucial.
The Future of Genetic Biocontrol in Africa
Key discussions at the Congress focused on ensuring the responsible deployment of genetic biotechnologies in Africa’s agriculture, healthcare, and environmental sectors. Experts underscored the need for policies that encourage innovation while addressing potential risks associated with genetic biocontrol. Dr. Muhammed urged stakeholders to prioritize public participation, biosafety communication, and awareness campaigns on genetic technologies. “The potential of genetic technologies in Africa is immense. By fostering collaboration between researchers, regulators, and policymakers, we can harness these innovations for sustainable development while ensuring safety and ethical considerations,” he said.
