GCB Bank Cushions Micro Small Businesses with Flexible Group Loan Scheme

GCB Bank PLC has launched a new initiative aimed at transforming Ghana’s small business sector with the introduction of the Micro Small Enterprises (MSE) Group Loan. The loan facility is designed to provide much needed financial support to small scale entrepreneurs, particularly market women, to help them expand their businesses and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Under this initiative, groups of five to ten individuals can access loans at a competitive 3% monthly interest rate. Each individual can borrow between GHC200 and GHC1,000, with a maximum of GHC200,000 per group. The loan operates on a joint and several undertakings model, meaning group members collectively guarantee each other’s repayment.
A key feature of the MSE Group Loan is its simplified application process, requiring only a Ghana Card for identification. Credit eligibility is assessed through daily e-collectors who monitor the applicant’s financial transactions. This approach ensures that even informal business operators, who often lack traditional banking records, can access financing.
The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s economy. With small and medium enterprises (SMEs) contributing about 70% of Ghana’s GDP, improved access to financing will enable small businesses to scale up operations, create employment, and enhance local trade. The move is also aligned with government efforts to boost financial inclusion, increase tax revenue, and reduce poverty.
Beyond benefiting businesses, the initiative has the potential to reduce unemployment, currently estimated at 14.7%, by enabling small businesses to hire more workers. The structured credit model also fosters business collaboration, accountability, and networking among traders and entrepreneurs.
GCB Bank PLC’s MSE Group Loan follows the successful implementation of similar group lending models in countries like Kenya and Bangladesh, where microloans have lifted millions out of poverty. The bank believes that with proper execution, this initiative could serve as a blueprint for other financial institutions, further positioning Ghana as a leader in inclusive financial services in Africa. With improved access to affordable credit, Ghanaian entrepreneurs now have a greater opportunity to expand their businesses, enhance their livelihoods and contribute to national economic growth.
