Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park: A Symbol Of Ghana’s Struggle For Independence

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, located in the heart of Accra, is a place of great historical significance, attracting scores of visitors, including school kids, who come to learn about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
According to Edward Quao, Acting Director of the park, the site holds a special place in Ghana’s history. “On March 6, 1957, Ghana gained independence, and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah chose the polo park as the declaration site,” Quao explained.
The choice of the polo park was not coincidental. During the colonial period, the park was reserved for British colonial masters, who would play polo there. Locals were barred from using the facility, and their only role was to clean up after the British.
Speaking on ZED FM’s Roots and Route’s show, Mr. Quao made this revelation, shedding light on the historical significance of the park. “It was a deliberate attempt to take back what was rightfully ours,” Quao said, highlighting Nkrumah’s strategic decision to declare independence at the polo park.
By declaring independence at this site, Nkrumah was making a powerful statement about Ghana’s newfound freedom. Today, the memorial park stands as a testament to Nkrumah’s vision and legacy.
The park has undergone significant renovations, including the construction of a Presidential Library, Freedom Hall, an amphitheater, and an audio-visual tunnel. These upgrades have attracted even more visitors, with the park now receiving over 208,000 visitors annually, up from 98,000 before the renovations.
“We are proud to see so many people taking an interest in Ghana’s history,” Quao said. The park’s museum showcases a collection of artifacts, including Nkrumah’s personal belongings, photographs, and documents. Visitors can also see a replica of the polo park as it was during the colonial period.
For many visitors, the park is a place of reflection and inspiration. “It’s amazing to think about how far we’ve come as a nation,” said one visitor. “Nkrumah’s legacy continues to inspire us to work towards a better future.” As the park continues to educate and inspire future generations, it’s clear that Kwame Nkrumah’s impact on Ghana’s history remains profound.
