Mercy Asubonteng appointed General Manager of Western Serene Atlantic Hotel

Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, a subsidiary of the First Sky Group, has appointed Mercy Abena Twumwaa Asubonteng as its new General Manager, effective 1 September 2025.

The hotel, formerly known as Best Western Plus Atlantic Hotel, was acquired by the First Sky Group in June 2024.

Originally built in 1962 under the leadership of Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the facility has since undergone major renovations to maintain its status as a premier hospitality destination in Takoradi. With 200 rooms, suites and chalets, it combines modern luxury with Ghanaian tradition.

Ms Asubonteng brings over 20 years of experience in the hospitality and tourism sector, having held senior roles including Food and Beverage Manager, Conference and Banqueting Executive, and Marketing Manager.

She previously served as Acting General Manager of Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, where she spearheaded growth initiatives and strengthened stakeholder relations.

Chief Executive Officer of Serene Hotels and Resorts, Mrs Rhoda Ashiabi, praised the appointment and described Ms Asubonteng’s leadership as critical to positioning the hotel among West Africa’s top five-star establishments within the next three years.

Executive Chairman of the First Sky Group, Mr Eric Seddy Kutortse, also lauded her elevation, saying it underscored the Group’s belief in women’s leadership and their role in driving success in a competitive global hospitality industry.

Responding to her appointment, Ms Asubonteng expressed her commitment to innovation and excellence.

“It is an honour to lead Western Serene Atlantic Hotel. I look forward to working with my team to strengthen the hotel’s footprint and establish it as the brand of choice in Ghana’s hospitality industry,” she said.

Ms Asubonteng holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management and Hospitality Law from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), along with professional certifications in food safety, auditing and customer service.
