PURC retrieves GH₵621, 742.65 in tariffs for 3 state utility providers in first half of 2023

Data collated by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) shows that the Commission has managed to retrieve a total of GH₵621, 742.65 for the state’s utility providers: the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), in the first six months of the year.
ECG/NEDCo recoveries
The amount retrieved for the two electricity providers is about GH₵240, 224.01, while the GWCL received GH₵381, 518. 64.
The amounts for the electricity revenue were recovered from three regions, namely the Ashanti, Eastern and Bono regions.
The biggest chunk of the electricity revenue – GH₵150, 481.52 – was recovered from the Bono Region.
The Ashanti Region followed with GH₵62, 622. 49, while about GH₵27, 120 was retrieved from the Eastern Region.
GWCL recoveries
In the area of water supply, the PURC managed to retrieve some GH₵381, 518. 64 from Eastern and Central regions.
In the Eastern Region it managed to retrieve some GH₵326, 093.64, while it managed to retrieve GH₵55, 425 in the Central Region.
Compensations
The PURC also ensured the ECG paid around GH₵5, 000 in compensation to their customers in the Greater Accra Region.
Adjustments
In the area of tariff adjustments, the PURC adjusted a total of GH₵1,292, 118.17 for the utility providers, with GH₵522,749.74 being adjusted for ECG and NEDCo and their customers, while the GWCL and its customers received GH₵769,368.43 in adjustments.
Electricity tariff adjustment
The highest amount adjusted for electricity supply was recorded in the Bono Region where an amount of GH₵198,430.80 was adjusted.
It was followed by the Greater Accra region where an amount of GH₵120, 754.35 was adjusted for the ECG’s customers.
The Greater Accra Region was followed by the Northern Region, where NEDCo customers in the region had about GH₵108,201.66 adjusted by the Utilities Commission.
The Ashanti and Eastern regions followed with about GH₵49,442.03 and GH₵33,211.64 being adjusted for customers in each region respectively.
The Western, Central, and Upper East regions recorded amounts which were less than GH₵10,000. In order of magnitude, they recorded GH₵8,828.80, GH₵2003.71 and GH₵1,072, in tariffs respectively.
The Volta region recorded the lowest amount in adjustments with customers receiving GH₵804 in adjustments.
Water Tariff Adjustment
The PURC, in the first half of 2023, made water tariff adjustments to the tune of GH₵769,368.43, nationwide.
The biggest chunk of the adjustments was recorded in the Greater Accra Region, where GH₵756,849.66. It was followed by the Eastern Region, where an amount of where GH₵10,611.53
These were followed by the Ashanti, Western and Bono regions, which recorded GH₵685, GH₵635 and GH₵586.64 respectively, in adjustments.
