Harnessing nature to combat climate change: Locally-led solutions critical

THE twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are having profound effects on communities worldwide, threatening livelihoods, ecosystems, and the very fabric of societies.

As these challenges intensify, nature-based solutions (NbS) for adaptation are emerging as a promising approach to mitigate impacts, restore ecosystems, and enhance resilience.

But what does this look like in practice? Across the globe, communities are leading innovative, locally tailored NbS initiatives that combine traditional knowledge with modern strategies to combat the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Promise of Nature-Based Solutions for Adaptation

Nature-based solutions for adaptation focus on managing, protecting, conserving, restoring, and sustainably using natural environments to increase resilience to climate change.

Unlike conventional interventions, NbS leverage the inherent strengths of natural ecosystems to address challenges like flooding, erosion, drought, and habitat loss. These solutions are not one-size-fits-all.

Instead, they require careful assessment of local ecosystems and the diverse social and cultural contexts in which they operate.

Central to the success of NbS is the involvement of local communities and Indigenous Peoples. Their in-depth understanding of local environments and the challenges they face allows them to craft solutions that are practical, culturally relevant, and sustainable.

When communities lead these efforts, they take ownership, ensuring long-term commitment and benefits.

The Importance of Locally Led Initiatives

Locally-led solutions not only empower communities but also ensure interventions are inclusive and equitable. Often, underrepresented groups—such as women, Indigenous Peoples, and smallholder farmers — are most affected by climate change but least involved in decision-making.

Supporting their leadership in NbS ensures their voices are heard, and their needs are met, creating interventions that are both effective and equitable.

Nine projects, spanning regions as diverse as Belize, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, exemplify the transformative potential of locally driven NbS. These initiatives address challenges ranging from coastal erosion to human-wildlife conflict, showcasing how community knowledge can innovate and adapt to the changing climate.

1. Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Belize

Belize, with its rich marine ecosystems, is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts like rising sea levels, warming waters, and ecosystem degradation. In response, local groups are spearheading innovative projects to restore coastal and marine resilience.

            •           Seaweed Seed Bank and Farm Tour:
The Belize Women Seaweed Farmers Association has established a seaweed seed bank and is developing sustainable seaweed farming practices near South Water Caye and Glover’s Reef Marine Reserves. Seaweed farming not only provides a sustainable income source but also enhances marine biodiversity by creating fish nurseries. The association is also introducing seaweed farm tours, tapping into the region’s tourism potential to diversify incomes.

            •           Debris Removal and Mangrove Restoration:
The Hopkins Fishermen Association is addressing flooding and ecosystem degradation in Hopkins Village by clearing debris from waterways and restoring mangroves. Mangroves serve as natural storm buffers, reduce erosion, and support biodiversity. This project combines traditional planting knowledge with community engagement to ensure long-term benefits.

2. Combating Erosion and Enhancing Water Management in Uganda

Uganda’s landscapes, marked by steep hills and fertile plains, face challenges from erosion, flooding, and prolonged droughts. Communities here are employing NbS to address these issues sustainably.

            •           Contour Trenches for Soil and Water Conservation:
In the highlands of the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Nyambuko Development Group is creating 15 kilometers of trenches to prevent landslides and control water flow. This approach stabilizes soil, reduces erosion, and improves agricultural productivity, directly benefiting local farmers.

            •           Rainwater Harvesting Systems:
The Bwitho Men and Women’s Development Group is introducing rainwater harvesting systems using locally sourced materials, such as soil-burnt bricks and river sand. These systems capture runoff to prevent soil loss while conserving water for farming. Overflow water is directed to conservation trenches, promoting sustainable land use.

3. Restoring Ecosystems Through Native Tree Planting

Planting native trees is a simple yet powerful strategy to address deforestation, habitat loss, and climate risks. Several groups supported by the CAPA Innovation Fund are championing this approach.

            •           Maya Nut Trees in Belize:
The Community Baboon Sanctuary Women’s Group is reintroducing hurricane-resistant Maya Nut trees to restore degraded riparian forests in the Maya Forest Corridor. These trees mitigate flooding, provide livestock feed, and support biodiversity while sequestering carbon.

            •           Mitigating Human-Wildlife Conflict in Uganda:
The Kyankwanzi Bakyara Tukorere Hamwe Biika Oguze Group is planting native and citrus trees along wildlife reserve boundaries to deter animals like elephants from damaging crops. Combining thorny species with odorous citrus trees creates a natural barrier, reducing conflict and protecting livelihoods.

            •           Bamboo and Native Trees in Zambia:
The Matoya Cooperative Nursery Project is restoring riparian ecosystems near the Nsongwe River by planting native trees and introducing bamboo cultivation. Bamboo offers environmental benefits and sustainable livelihood opportunities, such as crafts and construction materials.

            •           Drought-Resistant Trees in Zimbabwe:
The Asizameni Omama Cooperative in Zimbabwe is cultivating drought-resistant native trees for weaving and crafts. This initiative reduces reliance on natural resources while providing women with alternative income sources.

4. Empowering Communities for Sustainable Forest Management

In Zambia, the Kalobolelwa Community Group is taking a multifaceted approach to forest restoration. By creating demonstration plots within the Sioma Ngwezi National Park, the group is teaching sustainable forest management techniques, including fire management and pest control using natural herbs.

These efforts help conserve biodiversity while equipping community members with practical skills.

A Vision for Global Adoption

These projects underscore the potential of locally led NbS to address climate change and biodiversity loss. By integrating traditional knowledge with innovative practices, they demonstrate how communities can take charge of their futures.

Scaling up support for locally driven NbS is crucial. It requires investment, capacity building, and policies that empower communities. These interventions are not just solutions for climate resilience — they are pathways to sustainable development, social equity, and environmental harmony. As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, the stories of these communities provide hope and a blueprint for others to follow. By embracing nature and local knowledge, we can create a resilient, sustainable future for all.
