Tullow Oil CEO to step down in 2025

Tullow Oil has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Rahul Dhir, will step down and resign from the company’s board in 2025. This was disclosed in a circular issued to investors on December 5, 2024, in London.
The company’s board has initiated the process of identifying a successor for Mr. Dhir, who has served as CEO since 2020. In the statement, Tullow Oil assured investors of a seamless transition, stating that Dhir will remain in his role until a departure date is determined.
Reflecting on his tenure
Commenting on his exit, Mr. Dhir described his tenure at Tullow Oil as a privilege, highlighting key achievements during his leadership.
“During this period, we have achieved a step change in our operating performance, cost structure, and capital discipline. We have delivered over $1.1 billion in free cash flow and reduced net debt from $2.8 billion to approximately $1.4 billion,” he said.
He commended the Tullow team for fostering a strong culture of ownership and commitment to business goals. “With a robust pan-African platform, Tullow is well-positioned as a trusted partner and responsible operator to deliver the next phase of growth,” Dhir added.
A legacy of transformation
Rahul Dhir joined Tullow Oil as CEO on July 1, 2020, succeeding Dorothy Thompson. Before his appointment, he served as the CEO of Delonex Energy, an African-focused oil and gas company.
Dhir’s tenure at Tullow has been marked by a turnaround in the company’s fortunes. Under his leadership, the firm achieved significant operational and financial milestones, earning praise from the company’s Non-Executive Chairman.

The Non-Executive Chairman of Tullow Oil expressed gratitude for Dhir’s contributions, stating, “Since joining in 2020, Rahul has led a comprehensive turnaround and strategic reset of Tullow. His focus on operational and financial performance, debt reduction, and positioning the company for future growth has been exemplary.”
Market reaction
News of Rahul Dhir’s resignation has already impacted the market. UK-based Morning Star reported that Tullow Oil PLC shares dropped 7.0% to 22.88 GBP on the London Stock Exchange following the announcement.
