2024 Youth Connekt: More than just an event

THE 2024 Youth Connekt Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, provided a powerful reminder of Africa’s untapped potential.
Gathering over 20,000 young delegates from across the continent, the summit served as more than a meeting point — it became a beacon of possibility for Africa’s youth, offering a roadmap to tackle unemployment and unlock the continent’s economic prospects through innovation and skill development.
Under the theme ‘Jobs for Youth Through Innovative Skilling,’ the summit highlighted a pressing reality: while Africa’s youth remain the continent’s greatest resource, the skills, opportunities, and systems required to harness this demographic dividend are insufficient. This is not just a policy challenge but an urgent developmental imperative
Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP’s Regional Director, aptly pointed out that Africa’s future begins with its youth embracing values such as character, competence, and courage.
Leadership is no longer confined to political or organizational roles but is deeply personal, requiring individuals to build strong foundations in their own lives. Authentic leadership rooted in values has the power to transcend societal divisions and chart a collective course for progress.
Revolutionizing Africa’s Agriculture Sector
Among the many innovative solutions discussed at the summit, the spotlight on agribusiness and agritech is particularly significant. Africa’s agricultural sector, long viewed as traditional and unappealing to younger generations, holds untold potential.
Initiatives like the Timbuktoo Agritech Hub in Ghana aim to change that narrative by integrating technology, sustainability, and innovation.
By leveraging digital tools for climate-smart farming, intelligent crop management, and precision agriculture, these hubs will not only create jobs but also enhance food security and promote sustainable practices.
This approach rebrands agriculture as a dynamic and profitable sector, positioning it as a critical driver of economic transformation.
Innovation Through Collaboration
The Timbuktoo initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when partnerships are forged across sectors. With hubs dedicated to AgriTech, HealthTech, FinTech, and Greentech, the program underscores the importance of aligning youth creativity with cutting-edge solutions.
By connecting governments, educational institutions, private sector stakeholders, and the UNDP, Africa is building an ecosystem capable of nurturing its brightest minds.
The lesson here is clear: Africa’s success depends on its ability to work together. The continent must foster an environment where young people can access skills, participate in policy-making, and benefit from meaningful opportunities.
The Path Forward: A Call to Action
Africa’s youth cannot afford to remain passive observers in this transformative journey. As President Paul Kagame noted during the summit, “Africa has everything to be where it needs to be, to be who we have to be.” These words serve as both a reminder and a rallying cry. The time for action is now.
Young Africans must take ownership of their future by investing in education, engaging with policymaking processes, and contributing to decisions that shape the continent’s trajectory.
Likewise, leaders and stakeholders must prioritize policies and investments that empower youth, ensuring that they are equipped to thrive in a fast-evolving global economy.
As the 2024 Youth Connekt demonstrated, Africa’s greatest strength lies in its people — its innovators, its creators, its leaders.
By harnessing this collective power, the continent can transform challenges into opportunities, building a future that reflects the promise and potential of its young generation. Let this be the decade of decisive action for Africa, driven by youth innovation, collaboration, and resilience. The future we deserve is the one we create.
