John Kani champions African youth dev in the film industry

Renowned South African actor John Kani has revealed plans to establish a learning space aimed at building the capacities and abilities of African youth in the creative arts sector.

The initiative seeks to nurture talents in scriptwriting, acting, directing, and producing, thereby strengthening the African movie industry.

Kani, celebrated for his portrayal of King T’Chaka, the father of T’Challa (played by the late Chadwick Boseman) in Marvel’s Black Panther, shared this vision during an interview with Ghanaian media personality Doreen Avio.

“I am working with the ambassador. We are looking for places to create learning spaces to upskill and upgrade qualities of scriptwriting, acting, directing, and producing African stories,” Kani stated.

He emphasized that the program’s goal is to harness and refine African talents, which are often untapped, to ensure that authentic African stories can be told with higher quality and impact.

Revitalizing the African Movie Industry

Kani underscored the importance of investing in the creative arts sector, noting that such initiatives are crucial for the growth and global competitiveness of African cinema. With his extensive experience in acting and directing, Kani believes the continent’s potential in storytelling remains immense and largely unexplored.

“This will help grow the African movie industry,” he said, adding that storytelling is a powerful medium through which African cultures, histories, and experiences can gain recognition on the global stage.

Current Projects and Upcoming Premieres

The legendary actor, who has been involved in two major projects, disclosed that he is currently wrapping up a film in South Africa. He also announced his involvement in the upcoming The Lion King, a highly anticipated movie.

“I have to complete a movie I am doing in South Africa and then, on the 9th, probably be on the red carpet for the opening of The Lion King. I have been doing it for the past two projects now,” Kani shared.

A Storied Career in Film

John Kani has left an indelible mark on global cinema through his versatile roles in iconic films. Beyond his portrayal of King T’Chaka in Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War, he lent his voice to Rafiki in Disney’s 2019 adaptation of The Lion King. Kani has also captivated audiences in Netflix productions such as Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2, where he played Colonel Ulenga.

A Vision for the Future

Through his advocacy for skill development and storytelling, Kani is paving the way for a new generation of African filmmakers and actors. By investing in the creative abilities of the youth, the actor hopes to inspire a renaissance in African cinema, ensuring that the continent’s stories resonate across the globe.
