Mahama confers posthumous promotions on soldiers killed in helicopter crash

President John Dramani Mahama has posthumously promoted three officers of the Ghana Armed Forces who tragically perished in the August 6 helicopter crash.

Speaking during an interdenominational state funeral held on Friday, 15 August 2025, President Mahama underscored that the promotions are a mark of the nation’s profound respect and gratitude for the fallen officers.

He further announced that the Chief of Defence Staff will oversee the ceremonial presentation of the promotion insignias to the bereaved families.

The officers receiving posthumous honours are: Squadron Leader Peter Obafemi Anala, elevated to the rank of Wing Commander; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, promoted to Flight Lieutenant; Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, advanced to Flight Sergeant.

“Promotions within our Armed Forces are never granted lightly, and posthumous promotions represent the highest commendation for duty performed to the very end,” the President stated.

He emphasised that these honours go beyond mere symbolism, they reflect the rightful recognition these officers have earned through selfless service.

“These promotions are not just ceremonial; they represent the honour, dignity, and respect our nation owes to these heroes who gave their all,” President Mahama added.

Among those who tragically lost their lives in the accident were Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, who was serving as Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Also perishing in the crash were crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
