FWSC commits to promoting fairness

THE Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting fairness, transparency, and efficiency in public sector salary administration.

Speaking during a media engagement in Accra, the Chief Executive of the Commission, Ing. Benjamin Arthur, outlined significant accomplishments and addressed ongoing challenges.

Key achievements in salary administration

Ing. Arthur emphasized the strides made by the FWSC in ensuring equitable compensation for public servants across Ghana. Among the key achievements highlighted were:

  1. Successful Implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS):
The FWSC has harmonized public service salaries, eliminating disparities and ensuring fairness across the board.
  2. Completion of Negotiations and Agreements:
Since the beginning of the year, the FWSC has completed and signed negotiation agreements with 44 unions and institutions, fostering improved labour relations.
  3. Migration to a New Grade Structure:
Seven institutions have successfully been migrated to a new grade structure, enhancing salary administration processes.
  4. Linking Pay to Performance:
In a bid to enhance productivity, the FWSC has sensitized nine institutions on its initiative to link pay with performance.
  5. Nationwide Payroll Monitoring:
A rigorous payroll monitoring exercise saved Ghana a significant GH₵345 million, showcasing the Commission’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

Ing. Arthur commended whistle-blowers for their pivotal role in exposing irregularities in the public sector, which contributed to the success of the payroll monitoring initiative.

Challenges on the Labour Front

Despite these achievements, the Chief Executive acknowledged challenges, particularly in light of 2024 being an election year. Labour unrest presented a key hurdle, with 14 industrial actions recorded during the year. However, all strikes have been successfully resolved through dialogue and engagement.

“We would continue to engage with unions and stakeholders to address concerns and promote peaceful labour relations,” Ing. Arthur assured.

Looking Ahead

The FWSC is poised to sustain its progress by collaborating with stakeholders and the public to foster trust and ensure excellence in public sector salary administration. The Chief Executive called on all stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission’s mission to uphold fairness and accountability in the management of salaries, benefits, and allowances. As Ghana navigates the complexities of public sector wage management, the FWSC remains committed to maintaining harmony between government priorities and worker satisfaction.
