Flowerpot Interchange: A game-changer

– Cutting-edge facility to alleviate longstanding traffic congestion
PRESIDENT Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the Flowerpot Interchange on Spintex Road, signalling a new chapter in Ghana’s transportation and infrastructure transformation.
The cutting-edge facility is poised to alleviate longstanding traffic congestion, promote economic growth, and enhance connectivity across the Greater Accra Region.
The Flowerpot Interchange, a two-tier structure, connects the Burma Camp Bypass to Boundary Road via a North-South flyover and features redesigned roundabouts to improve traffic circulation.
For years, the Flowerpot Roundabout was infamous for gridlock, with peak traffic volumes exceeding 5,000 vehicles per hour. This project provides a lasting solution to a critical bottleneck in Accra’s road network.

The construction was jointly funded by the Government of Ghana and a facility from AfreximBank. Messrs. China Railway No. 5 Engineering GH. Limited handled the construction, with oversight from Deoke Limited on behalf of the Department of Urban Roads.
Comprehensive Features for Seamless Connectivity
The interchange incorporates several innovative features designed to enhance mobility, safety, and urban aesthetics:
- Viaduct and Flyovers
An 802-meter viaduct connects the Palace Mall Intersection on Martey Tsuru Road to Boundary Road in East Legon, ensuring uninterrupted travel.
- Strategic Ramps
Ramps from Shiashie and Tema integrate the interchange into the broader Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) road network.
- New Roads
Newly constructed roads through East Legon and Cantonments to the Airport area provide alternate routes for commuters
- Pedestrian and Cyclist-Friendly Infrastructure
Dedicated walkways and cycling lanes offer safer travel options for non-motorized users.

- Public Transport Provisions
Lay-bys along the project route accommodate buses and other public transport, making the interchange inclusive.
- Parking and Public Spaces
A 100-car parking lot under the viaduct supports local businesses, while fountains and public art enrich the urban landscape.
Economic and Social Benefits
The Flowerpot Interchange promises far-reaching benefits beyond traffic decongestion. It connects key areas such as Osu, La, Cantonments, Tse Addo, East Airport, Ledzokuku, East Legon, Adjiringanor, Adentan, and Madina, creating seamless linkages that are vital for trade and commerce.
President Akufo-Addo underscored the economic significance of the project, stating, “This is not just an interchange; it is a symbol of our commitment to ensuring every Ghanaian experiences the tangible benefits of governance. Roads are pathways to opportunity and prosperity.”
The project also aligns with the government’s broader vision to modernize Ghana’s infrastructure. By reducing travel times, improving the flow of goods and services, and supporting local businesses, the interchange will contribute significantly to the nation’s economic vitality.

The Flowerpot Interchange adds to a series of landmark projects under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, which has completed several major road infrastructure projects, including the Pokuase, Tema Motorway, and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges.
“We have constructed more roads and interchanges than any other administration in Ghana’s history. From the northern savannahs to the southern coastline, we are building a new Ghana where infrastructure serves as a catalyst for development,” President Akufo-Addo remarked during the commissioning.
He also highlighted ongoing projects, such as the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II and interchanges in Nungua, Adjiringanor, and Suame, as part of a broader effort to tackle Ghana’s infrastructure deficits comprehensively.
Collaboration and Execution
The President commended the Ministry of Roads and Highways, led by Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, and his predecessor, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, for their pivotal roles in the project. He also praised the Department of Urban Roads and the contractors for their efficiency and dedication to quality.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye described the project as a game-changer for Accra’s traffic challenges, particularly in the vibrant commercial area around Spintex Road. “This infrastructure marks another significant milestone in the government’s commitment to improving road networks across the country,” he stated.
Call for Responsible Use
President Akufo-Addo urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize road safety. He called on Ghanaians to collectively maintain the infrastructure to ensure its longevity. “The Flowerpot Interchange is a legacy for our children and grandchildren. Let us safeguard this asset and let it stand as a testament to what we can achieve together,” he concluded.
A Transformative Impact The Flowerpot Interchange is expected to reduce traffic congestion, promote economic activity, and improve the quality of life for residents and commuters in the Greater Accra Region. With its modern design and community-focused features, the project represents a bold step toward a more interconnected and prosperous Ghana.
