Ghana marks 2024 African Statistics Day

GHANA has joined the rest of the African continent in commemorating the 2024 African Statistics Day today, November 18, 2024.
Themed ‘Supporting Education by Modernizing the Production of Fit-for-Purpose Statistics,’ the celebration highlighted the critical role of accurate and accessible data in advancing Ghana’s educational agenda and overall socio-economic development.
A Day of Advocacy and Innovation
Organized by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in collaboration with key stakeholders, the event featured a series of activities emphasizing the value of modernized statistical systems. The day’s highlight was a panel discussion involving experts from the Ministry of Education, academia, civil society organizations, and GSS, who shared insights into how data-driven approaches can address challenges in education.
The panel explored themes such as equitable resource allocation, evidence-based policy formulation, and innovative ways to enhance learning outcomes. Discussions emphasized the role of timely and accessible data in bridging disparities in education and supporting reforms aimed at improving access and quality.

Statistical Data Hackathon Inspires Innovation
A key feature of the celebration was the Statistical Data Hackathon, an initiative aimed at leveraging real-world data to solve pressing educational challenges. Inspired by the GSS StatsBank platform, the Hackathon brought together students, data scientists, educators, and policymakers to develop innovative, data-driven solutions.
Participants focused on areas such as:
- Ensuring Resource Equity: Using data to analyze disparities and direct resources to underserved schools.
- Improving Learning Outcomes: Creating tools to monitor student performance and inform targeted interventions.
- Supporting Teachers: Developing data insights to tailor professional development programs.
The Hackathon showcased the potential of StatsBank, a comprehensive platform providing open access to national datasets, as a tool for fostering collaboration and innovation across sectors.
Government Statistician Urges Continued Action
Speaking at the event, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, reiterated the importance of modernizing Ghana’s statistical systems to support education. He noted, “Our ability to produce fit-for-purpose data is essential not just for planning and policy formulation but also for addressing disparities and ensuring inclusive development. The success of initiatives like StatsBank and the Statistical Data Hackathon demonstrates how data can transform education.”
A Call for Collective Effort
The 2024 African Statistics Day celebration emphasized the need for collaboration among key stakeholders:
- Government must prioritize integrating statistical insights into educational reforms.
- GSS should continue advancing platforms like StatsBank to improve accessibility and data literacy.
- Educators and policymakers are encouraged to use data tools for curriculum design and evidence-based decision-making.
- Civil society and media must advocate for the role of data in education and ensure accountability.
- Parents and students are urged to leverage available data to advocate for better opportunities.
A Broader Vision for Development
Since its establishment in 1990 by the United Nations Commission for Africa (UNECA), African Statistics Day has served as a platform to deepen public awareness of the vital role statistics play in development.
This year’s theme reinforced the connection between education and data modernization, underscoring their shared importance in shaping Ghana’s future. As Ghana concludes the day’s activities, the nation stands poised to harness the power of statistics not only as a tool for analysis but also as a driver of transformative change in education and beyond.
