Volkswagen boosts stake in joint venture with Rivian Amid rising EV competition

Volkswagen Group (VW) has expanded its partnership with U.S.-based electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian, increasing its investment in their joint venture to $5.8 billion, up from an initial $5 billion commitment.
The collaboration aims to leverage shared technology and reduce costs as both companies navigate a cooling global demand for EVs and growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
The announcement boosted Rivian’s shares by over 9% in after-hours trading, reflecting investor optimism in the new venture. The partnership provides Rivian with vital funding for the upcoming launch of its R2 model—a compact, more affordable SUV aimed at broadening its customer base. VW, in turn, will gain access to Rivian’s cutting-edge technology, expected to be incorporated into its own vehicle lineup starting in 2027.
The venture also includes a shared development framework, with engineers from both companies initially collaborating in California and establishing three additional facilities across North America and Europe. This integration aims to accelerate innovation and streamline production costs, the companies said in a joint statement.
The partnership comes at a pivotal time for VW, as the automaker faces pressures to cut costs due to rising operational expenses, lower-than-anticipated EV sales, and strong competition from Chinese automakers. The VW Group, which encompasses brands like Audi, Lamborghini, and Porsche, has been grappling with sluggish progress in its transition from traditional combustion engines to electric.
Rivian, which remains unprofitable, is also implementing cost-saving measures in response to softer EV demand. The company has been renegotiating supplier contracts and optimizing its manufacturing processes.
Alongside its SUVs, Rivian produces electric delivery vans, primarily for Amazon, its largest investor. Amazon has ordered 100,000 of these vans, slated for delivery by the end of the decade, solidifying Rivian’s role in the commercial EV market.
