Uncle Ato calls for better treatment and support for church musicians

Ghanaian gospel musician Uncle Ato has expressed dissatisfaction with how some churches treat their instrumentalists and musicians. Speaking on Showbiz 360 with TV3, Uncle Ato referenced Luke 10:7, which states, “every labourer deserves their wages,” to highlight his concerns. He urged churches to pay more attention to their musicians and those in need of support.

“The scripture is clear,” he said, citing 1 Corinthians 9, which emphasizes that no soldier should go to war without being properly equipped. “No soldier goes to war buying his own uniform and boots—he deserves to be taken care of,” Uncle Ato explained. He also referred to Matthew 10, which stresses that a laborer deserves to be paid, further stressing that when musicians serve the church, they should receive support, including lodging and basic needs.

While acknowledging that some churches may not have the financial means to pay their musicians a regular salary, Uncle Ato emphasized the importance of showing care for their well-being. “Even if you don’t put them on a salary, show them that you care,” he suggested.

Uncle Ato also pointed out that many church leaders are unaware of the struggles musicians face, such as where they sleep, what they eat, or how they get to church. “We need to pay attention. We collect church offerings to support orphanages and those on the streets, so why not support those who are contributing to the church? It’s not a problem at all,” he argued. Known for hits like “Mensuro,” “Jesus,” “Aseda,” “Kronkron,” and “Mewo Anyidado,” Uncle Ato continues to use his platform to advocate for better treatment of gospel musicians within the church community.
