TransferTo, Ecobank partner to advance cross-border payments

IN a bold move to enhance financial inclusion and streamline cross-border payments across Africa, Singapore-based technology group TransferTo has announced a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ecobank Group, one of Africa’s foremost pan-African financial institutions.

The partnership brings together the specialized expertise of TransferTo’s companies—Thunes, Ezra, DT One, and Tookitaki — and Ecobank’s widespread network to drive secure, seamless digital financial solutions for millions across the continent.

A Vision to Transform Financial Access Across Africa

TransferTo and Ecobank’s collaboration is set to reshape financial services in Africa by tackling key barriers to financial inclusion, such as limited access to credit, high cross-border transaction fees, and financial exclusion in underserved communities.

Together, the two organizations aim to create a financial ecosystem that enables individuals and businesses in Africa to access the tools they need for economic empowerment.

By leveraging TransferTo’s advanced technologies and Ecobank’s local expertise, this partnership envisions a continent where financial services are accessible to all, including those who have traditionally been excluded.

According to TransferTo CEO Peter De Caluwe, the partnership with Ecobank enables the two companies to combine their strengths to meet Africa’s unique financial needs.

“By integrating our expertise with Ecobank’s deep local knowledge, we are crafting secure, straightforward pathways to credit, payments, and financial growth for millions of people,” said De Caluwe

“This alliance is more than a partnership; it’s a mission to fuel positive change across the continent,” he added.

Jeremy Awori, CEO of Ecobank Group, highlighted how TransferTo’s innovation in digital payments and financial technology is well-aligned with Ecobank’s mission of expanding secure, reliable financial solutions across Africa.

“This partnership marks a significant step towards bridging gaps and unlocking potential across African communities,” Awori explained.

Key Components of the Partnership

The strategic alliance focuses on specific solutions tailored to Africa’s unique financial landscape, with each of TransferTo’s subsidiaries contributing specialized expertise to drive transformation:

Thunes and Ecobank: Cross-Border Payments Solution

  1. Thunes’ Direct Global Network will work with Ecobank to simplify and accelerate cross-border payments. The integration includes QR code payment solutions that connect financial apps worldwide, including China’s cashless economy, to Africa, enhancing the ease and speed of cross-border transactions for individuals and businesses alike. This capability has the potential to drive trade and economic cooperation between Africa and other major regions globally, creating opportunities for SMEs and individuals needing cost-effective, fast remittance services.
  2. DT One and Ecobank: Enhancing Digital Rewards and Customer Engagement
    • DT One will support Ecobank in enhancing its customer offerings by integrating digital rewards directly into Ecobank’s Mobile App and Xpress Accounts. This collaboration allows customers to redeem airtime, data bundles, gift cards, and vouchers through a single platform, offering additional flexibility and value. By making these digital rewards available, Ecobank aims to deepen customer engagement, providing a more robust and satisfying banking experience for customers in a market where mobile phone use is widespread.
  3. Ezra and Ecobank: Expanding Access to Credit
    • Ezra’s partnership with Ecobank will broaden access to nano loans and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options, specifically aimed at underbanked individuals who may not have access to traditional credit. These solutions empower individuals and small businesses to build credit histories, enabling them to transition to more significant loan opportunities over time. This credit pathway is crucial for Africa’s largely informal economy, where access to traditional banking remains limited, and can help customers progressively achieve greater financial stability.
  4. Tookitaki and Ecobank: Enhancing Financial Security and Compliance
    • In an era of increasing digital transactions, Tookitaki’s expertise in anti-money laundering (AML) technology will strengthen Ecobank’s compliance frameworks. This partnership includes specialized AML training for Ecobank staff to improve their ability to detect and manage financial crimes, thereby protecting the bank and its customers. By integrating advanced compliance technology, Ecobank and Tookitaki aim to offer a safer banking environment that meets global financial standards.

Implications for Africa’s Financial Landscape

This strategic partnership between TransferTo and Ecobank has significant implications for financial inclusion in Africa. The combined efforts of these two organizations are expected to drive financial empowerment across multiple levels, from individual customers to businesses.

By addressing the needs of underbanked communities, the partnership is anticipated to create pathways out of financial exclusion, enabling millions to participate in the formal economy.

Moreover, the collaboration could stimulate regional economic growth by easing cross-border payments and enhancing the accessibility of digital financial products.

For instance, the expanded capabilities for cross-border payments facilitated by Thunes can simplify remittance flows for Africa’s substantial diaspora communities, enabling funds to be sent home with greater ease and affordability.

These remittances are a critical lifeline for many African households, providing funds for education, healthcare, and business investments.

Ecobank’s expanded mobile offerings, supported by DT One’s digital rewards, also offer promising avenues for engaging a younger, digitally-savvy demographic.

With the added convenience and value of integrated airtime and data bundles, Ecobank aims to build loyalty among young users who prioritize flexibility and accessibility in their banking experience.

Supporting Africa’s Economic Integration and Digital Transformation

As Africa moves toward greater economic integration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the demand for secure, efficient, and affordable cross-border payment systems is becoming more pressing. By focusing on digital transformation and financial inclusion, TransferTo and Ecobank’s partnership is well-aligned with the continent’s broader economic aspirations, providing the infrastructure needed to support cross-border trade and intra-regional commerce.
