Prez Akufo-Addo launches 5G technology to drive Ghana’s digital transformation

In a landmark move for Ghana’s digital economy, President Nana Akufo-Addo has officially launched Next Gen Infraco (NGIC)’s 5G service, in partnership with global tech leaders Nokia, Radisys, and Tech Mahindra.
This launch establishes NGIC as Ghana’s premier 5G wholesale infrastructure provider, aiming to enable telecommunications operators across the country to deliver high-speed, reliable connectivity as part of Ghana’s Digital Agenda 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Themed “5G: Accelerating Ghana’s Digital Transformation,” the launch signals a transformative step toward positioning Ghana as a digitally advanced nation. In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the significance of 5G technology for economic empowerment, innovation, and inclusivity, underscoring the government’s commitment to harnessing technology for Ghana’s socio-economic advancement.
Creating the Foundation for Digital Empowerment
NGIC’s infrastructure will empower telecom providers by offering flexible access to 5G capabilities without the need for them to build their own networks. This wholesale model promotes the accessibility and affordability of 5G services, making it possible for urban and rural communities alike to enjoy high-speed internet connectivity. NGIC CEO Tenu Awoonor expressed the company’s dedication to providing a resilient 5G infrastructure that meets the country’s evolving digital landscape, noting, “This launch is a critical step toward realizing our vision of a connected Ghana, where opportunity reaches every corner of the nation.”
Strategic Rollout Across Ghana
The rollout is set to commence with major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi and aims to cover all urban centers by the end of 2024, with nationwide coverage, including rural areas, targeted for completion by 2026. By leveraging NGIC’s infrastructure, telecom providers can rapidly deliver 5G services, stimulating growth, innovation, and digital inclusivity nationwide.
Global Partnerships Driving Ghana’s Digital Revolution
NGIC’s collaborative approach with Nokia, Radisys, and Tech Mahindra promises a high-performance 5G network aligned with global standards. Mikko Lavanti, Nokia’s Senior Vice President for MEA Mobile Networks, praised Ghana’s commitment to digital transformation, saying, “We are excited to partner with NGIC to bring advanced 5G solutions that will drive Ghana’s economic and social development.”
Radisys CEO Arun Bhikshesvaran highlighted the company’s scalable, software-centric technology, which will enable NGIC to maintain cost-efficiency and high service standards as it rapidly expands. Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra’s Head of Africa Network Services Sales, Rajiv Vyas, noted that the collaboration would empower sectors like telemedicine, logistics, and education. “Our AI-driven analytics, automation, and IoT capabilities will optimize NGIC’s 5G infrastructure, helping build smarter, connected communities,” he remarked.

Tracking the Cedi’s Performance: Building Confidence Through Stability
The cedi’s journey this year has been challenging, trading recently at nearly GHS 17 to a dollar and reflecting a 24.3% year-to-date depreciation. The Bank of Ghana has responded by building foreign reserves and adjusting policies to manage fluctuations. Governor Dr. Ernest Addison reiterated the bank’s commitment to stabilize the currency and reinforce investor trust, noting, “Building reserves is essential to minimize exchange rate fluctuations, safeguard economic stability, and bolster the local currency.”
