MPS CEO urges greater focus on Customs’ risk engine to streamline cargo clearance

Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Port Services (MPS), Mr. Mohammed Samara, has called for a stronger emphasis on utilizing the Customs’ risk engine for cargo clearance at Terminal 3 to reduce the need for 100 percent inspections of freight.
Mr. Samara highlighted the high level of cargo inspections currently being conducted and stressed the importance of optimizing the risk engine developed by Customs. This system, he explained, can effectively differentiate between high-risk and low-risk cargo, allowing non-risky trade to benefit from faster clearance, a practice in line with global port standards.
Speaking at the company’s Customer Service Week forum, Mr. Samara noted that a customer’s experience at the port is not only influenced by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) or MPS but also by other statutory services involved in cargo processing. He urged these services to improve their approach to match the growing demands and speed of the global logistics chain.
“We are hopeful that the relevant authorities can align their business processes with the speed of trade, ensuring that their operations reflect the evolving expectations of customers,” Mr. Samara said.
He also appealed to stakeholders within the cargo clearance chain to refine their procedures to increase operational efficiency. Furthermore, he reminded customers to adhere to the terminal’s truck appointment system to minimize delays and ensure smooth operations.
Mr. Samara emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders and customers, calling for continuous constructive feedback to help MPS enhance its service delivery.
“In a service-oriented environment, it is essential to measure and gauge the quality of service provided. The best way to do this is through forums where we can listen to and understand customer concerns and expectations,” he noted. During the forum, some customers provided feedback on operational challenges they encountered with MPS services. In response, MPS Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Steen Larsen, assured participants that the company would address these issues promptly.
