Gospel singer Piesie Esther shares her story

Story: Lydia BOATENG, Accra
Gospel musician and songwriter, Esther Asiedu known in the showbiz space as Piesie Esther has opened up about the intersection of fashion and her career as a gospel artist, addressing the judgment often directed at female gospel singers for their choice of clothing.
In an interview on Highway 1019 on Zed 101.9fm, Piesie Esther shared her perspective on how she carefully considers her appearance before stepping out for public events. She explained that she takes time to look at herself in the mirror, making sure her attire aligns with her values. While she doesn’t feel offended by criticisms of her looks, she admits to occasionally feeling embarrassed when she dresses in a certain way. However, she believes it’s important to reflect on why people might judge her appearance and to use that feedback constructively.
“I don’t take it personally when people criticize my appearance. Instead, I sit down and ask myself why they are talking about me and why they might be looking at me awkwardly. It’s important to identify what it is and work on it,” she said.
Piesie Esther also spoke about her thoughts on awards in the gospel music industry, expressing frustration that many artists, including herself, are not always recognized for their hard work. She revealed that there have been times when she felt her songs deserved awards, but she was not even nominated.
“Sometimes, I feel like I’ve been overlooked, and that’s painful,” she confessed. “But I’ve come to understand that the board members know what’s best. Even if I don’t win, I have to trust the process and appreciate that the hard work will eventually be recognized.” When asked if she believes in awards, she explained that they are valuable because they reflect the results of her hard work and serve as recognition of her efforts.
Addressing the notion of competition in gospel music, Piesie Esther emphasized that there is no real competition among gospel artists. “Every gospel artist has their own unique message to share through their music,” she said. “For me, it’s not about competing; it’s about delivering the message of the gospel in the best way I can.” Piesie Esther’s thoughts offer a candid look into the challenges and rewards of being a gospel artist in today’s industry, as well as her commitment to using her platform for positive impact.
