Leveraging digital technology to fight breast cancer

AS October ushers in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there’s a renewed sense of urgency anddedication to combating one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women in Ghana.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer accounts for approximately 31.8% of all cancers diagnosed among women in Ghana, with an estimated 2,000 deaths annually due to late detection and limited access to effective treatment, making it the most common form of cancer in the country.
Additionally, the Ghana Health Service reports that about 4,600 new cases are diagnosed each year, with a significant portion presenting at advanced stages.
These alarming statistics underscore the need for innovative approaches in combating breast cancer. With the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology, we now have unprecedented opportunities to fight breast cancer through enhanced awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
This article explores how health workers and practitioners in Ghana can leverage digital technology to address the rising tide of breast cancer and ultimately save more lives.
Raising Awareness and Education through Digital Platforms
The advent of digital technology has revolutionized how we access and share information. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube have become powerful tools for breast cancer awareness campaigns.
Through targeted posts, live videos, webinars, and virtual workshops, healthcare practitioners can educate women about the importance of early detection, risk factors, and the need for regular screenings. Chatbots can operate 24/7, making it possible for women to access vital information and support whenever they need it, especially in rural areas where healthcare access may be limited.
AI in Early Detection and Diagnosis
Early detection is crucial in the fight against breast cancer, as it significantly improves treatment outcomes. AI-powered diagnostic tools have proven to be game-changers in identifying breast cancer at its earliest stages. In Ghana, healthcare practitioners can deploy AI algorithms to analyze mammograms and ultrasound images with remarkable accuracy, reducing the chances of false positives or negatives.
These AI systems are trained to detect even the smallest abnormalities that the human eye might miss, making it easier for radiologists to identify potential cases of breast cancer. This technology can be particularly beneficial in rural communities where there might be a shortage of radiologists, as AI can serve as an additional layer of support for diagnosis.

Telemedicine has gained immense popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continues to play a pivotal role in providing healthcare services to those in remote or underserved areas. In Ghana, where healthcare facilities may not be easily accessible to everyone, telemedicine platforms offer a convenient way for women to consult with breast cancer specialists without travelling long distances.
By using video calls, phone calls, or instant messaging, healthcare practitioners can guide patients through self-examinations, discuss symptoms, and recommend further testing if necessary. This digital approach helps bridge the gap between urban and rural healthcare access, ensuring that more women receive timely consultations and interventions.
Wearable Technology and Mobile Health Apps
Wearable devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, are increasingly being used to monitor health parameters and can play a vital role in the fight against breast cancer. These devices can track physical activity levels, sleep patterns, and overall health metrics, which are essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing cancer risk.
Additionally, mobile health apps tailored for breast cancer awareness and prevention can be developed to remind women to perform regular self-examinations, schedule mammograms, and track any changes in their breast health.
These apps can also provide valuable insights into healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercise routines, dietary tips, and stress management techniques, which are crucial in reducing the risk of breast cancer.
In Ghana, healthcare practitioners can use AI to identify which patients are likely to respond well to specific treatments, reducing the trial-and-error approach that often accompanies cancer treatment. This not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces healthcare costs and minimizes the side effects associated with ineffective treatments.
