5G service set for rollout in Ghana Nov 1

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has confirmed that Ghana is ready to launch its 5G service on November 1, 2024. Speaking during an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show with Kwami Sefa Kayi on October 2, 2024, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful assured the public that all necessary preparations for the 5G rollout have been completed.
Earlier this year, the government announced plans to introduce 5G technology by the end of 2024, with the minister now confirming the November rollout.
What is 5G?
5G, the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, offers significantly faster internet speeds, quicker upload and download times, and more consistent connections. While it uses the same radio frequencies as 3G and 4G networks, 5G brings major improvements in speed, latency, and bandwidth, making it up to 10 times faster than 4G Plus. This will enhance connectivity and provide a more reliable experience for users.
Government’s 5G Rollout Plan
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful previously stated that the government has partnered with seven industry players to establish a shared infrastructure for 5G services, aimed at delivering high-speed, affordable mobile broadband across the country. During a press briefing, she highlighted the potential benefits of 5G, including faster data, reduced latency, and improved access to digital services such as healthcare, education, and financial services.Consortium of Partners for 5G
The government has awarded the 5G license to Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a new shared infrastructure company co-promoted by the government and seven partner firms. These include Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana. The consortium aims to provide affordable, high-speed mobile broadband services to Ghanaians, positioning the country as a leader in digital transformation in West Africa.
