Move To Promote Sustainable Dev

– It will advance Ghana’s green growth strategy – Dr Ampaabeng

Story: By Isaac AIDOO, Accra

IN a significant move toward promoting sustainable economic growth, the Government of Ghana has launched the first phase of its Green Finance Taxonomy framework.

The initiative, unveiled at the 2024 SDGs Investment Fair in Accra, aims to direct investments into sectors that are critical to Ghana’s green growth agenda and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Themed ‘Unlocking Green Growth: Financing the Future through Sustainable Investments,’ the SDGs Investment Fair served as a platform to highlight the country’s strategic approach to financing sustainable development.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, emphasized the importance of Ghana’s Green Finance Taxonomy, particularly in light of ongoing global discussions about reforming the international financial system.

“The Green Finance Taxonomy is a pivotal tool for Ghana as it allows us to develop a framework that addresses two key objectives — reducing our debt levels to sustainable thresholds while also improving environmental sustainability,” Dr. Amin stated.

He noted that the taxonomy will play a crucial role in managing the transition from carbon-intensive industries, such as oil, gas, and mining, to more sustainable, low-carbon alternatives.

Ghana, which relies heavily on high-carbon activities for revenue and economic growth, faces significant challenges in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Dr. Amin highlighted the need for a “transitional taxonomy” that would enable industries like oil, gas, and mining to define their own paths toward decarbonization while ensuring the economy remains stable.

“This is a critical juncture, and these industries must rise to the challenge,” Dr. Amin remarked. “However, we must ensure that the transition provides opportunities for harnessing the potential of low-carbon economies, particularly in creating green jobs and sustainable growth.”

A key component of the Ghana Green Finance Taxonomy is its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Amin stressed that the taxonomy will help accelerate the country’s efforts toward achieving its SDG objectives, especially in critical areas like renewable energy, forestry management, and water conservation.

He added that sustainable financing will be essential for supporting these initiatives, as it provides the financial resources needed for green investments.

“The Green Finance Taxonomy offers us a structured framework to align national investments with global sustainability standards,” Dr. Amin continued. “It is a powerful tool for attracting both domestic and international capital into projects that will build climate resilience and advance sustainable development.”

The taxonomy not only fosters transparency and consistency in what qualifies as a green investment, but it also boosts investor confidence in Ghana’s green projects, positioning the country to attract sustainable finance on a larger scale.

This framework will be crucial in mobilizing private capital, facilitating access to international finance, and supporting Ghana’s efforts to meet the 2030 SDGs deadline.

Dr. Amin also emphasized that the taxonomy will enhance Ghana’s ability to finance projects related to clean energy, sustainable urban development, and biodiversity protection. As global interest in sustainable finance grows, Ghana’s Green Finance Taxonomy positions the country to leverage initiatives like the SDG Stimulus to fund impactful projects and strengthen economic resilience.

Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Eva Mends, underscored the significance of this year’s SDGs Investment Fair, noting that it coincides with Ghana’s broader efforts to accelerate SDG implementation. With just six years remaining until the 2030 deadline, she stressed the urgency of mobilizing funding for sustainable development.

“We are at a crucial point where sustainable finance is becoming a key driver of development worldwide,” Mrs. Mends said. “The Accra SDGs Investment Fair is playing a central role in Ghana’s contribution to this global push.”

Launching the framework, Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng echoed the sentiment of earlier speakers, stating that the Green Finance Taxonomy is essential for advancing Ghana’s green growth strategy. He highlighted the importance of the framework in attracting sustainable investments that will contribute to achieving the SDGs and driving long-term economic development.

“The theme of this year’s fair reflects our collective ambition to harness green finance as a driving force for sustainable development,” Dr. Ampaabeng said. “With this taxonomy, we are taking a critical step forward in positioning Ghana as a leader in green finance and sustainable growth.” The launch of the Green Finance Taxonomy marks a new chapter in Ghana’s journey toward a more sustainable and inclusive economy, providing a clear roadmap for directing investments into sectors that will drive green growth and help the country meet its global commitments.
