Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC shows resilient financial performance

Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC, Ghana’s only total beverage business, demonstrated significant resilience throughout the fiscal year ending July 2024. Despite facing daunting economic challenges, including the depreciation of the Ghana cedi, escalating inflation, and persistent forex pressures, the company remains optimistic about its long-term growth prospects.

At the “Facts Behind the Figures” event, held in collaboration with the Ghana Stock Exchange, Managing Director Felicite Nson acknowledged the difficulties encountered in the fiscal year 2024 (F24).

“This past year presented unprecedented challenges for our business and the wider economy. Depreciating currency, escalating input costs, and soaring inflation placed immense pressure on our operations. However, I am proud of how we responded,” Nson stated.

Despite these economic headwinds, Guinness Ghana implemented several strategic measures to mitigate the impact of rising costs and ensure financial stability. Key strategies included implementing cost-saving initiatives, maintaining investment in its flagship brands, and streamlining internal processes. These efforts allowed the company to weather the storm and position itself for recovery and future growth.

“We are optimistic about the future, confident in our renewed focus on innovation and efficiency. As we move into the new fiscal year, we believe our operational improvements, resilient teams, and trusted brands will drive sustainable growth,” Nson added, highlighting the company’s long-term strategy for recovery.

Financial Performance

Guinness Ghana showcased resilience in the latter half of F24, recording growth across critical financial metrics. Notably, revenue increased by 34%, demonstrating the company’s adaptability in a volatile environment. Additionally, through stringent cost controls, Guinness Ghana successfully maintained a positive cash flow despite economic challenges. Profitability also improved, signaling a steady recovery from the difficult economic conditions of the past year.

Leadership Transition

The company also saw significant leadership changes during the fiscal year. Busola Doregos was appointed as the new Finance Director, succeeding Justin Mollel, who was promoted to Finance Director for Diageo Ireland. Doregos is expected to focus on ensuring long-term financial health, value creation, and prudent fiscal management. Her leadership will be crucial as Guinness Ghana continues to navigate its current challenges and set the stage for future growth.

Community and Sustainability Initiatives

Corporate Relations Director, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, emphasized the company’s continued dedication to positive social impact through its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts. “In service of our ‘Spirit of Progress’ 10-year ESG action plan, we remained committed to promoting positive drinking, championing inclusion and diversity, and pioneering grain-to-glass sustainability. These initiatives are not only critical enablers of our growth ambitions but also a commercial imperative for our business,” she remarked.

Despite the tough economic environment, Guinness Ghana continued its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The company’s “Water for Life” Programme, in partnership with WaterAid Ghana, provided clean drinking water to the Kayoro-Saboro community in the Kassena Nankana district and the Ullo-Dantie community in the Jirapa Municipality. Since 2020, the program has replenished over 250,000m³ of water across more than 10 communities in northern Ghana. Additionally, the Local Raw Material Sourcing initiative positively impacted around 39,776 farmers in the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Savannah, and Bono East regions, strengthening the sorghum and maize value chains.

Looking Forward Looking ahead, Managing Director Felicite Nson expressed optimism about the company’s future. “Though the economic environment remains tough, we are entering the next fiscal year with confidence. The foundation we have built, combined with our passion for innovation and commitment to operational excellence, ensures that Guinness Ghana will continue to grow. We are excited for the opportunities ahead and are prepared to deliver strong returns for our shareholders.”
