Trigmatic Reflects on Challenges of Embracing Pan-African Music

Ghanaian rapper Trigmatic has opened up about the difficulties he’s faced since transitioning from producing mainstream club hits to focusing on Pan-African-themed music. Speaking with Kofi Hayford on Joy FM’s Drive Time show on Friday, September 27, 2024, the rapper shared insights into the challenges and rewards of his shift toward creating music that inspires self-actualization and promotes African unity.

Trigmatic, known for his hit song “Motromodwo,” described the journey as both fulfilling and isolating. “It’s been worth it, it’s been very fulfilling… [but] it’s been a period of loneliness, being misunderstood, and so forth,” he admitted. The decision to pivot to conscious music, he said, was particularly painful as he lost key team members who couldn’t align with his new direction. “Some of them didn’t understand me,” he explained.

Despite the setbacks, Trigmatic remains resolute in his commitment to using his platform for education and positive impact. He credited his visit to Nigeria for Felabration, an annual festival celebrating the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, as a turning point in his musical evolution. The experience, which featured artists deeply connected to African culture, left a lasting impression on him.

“That trip changed my perspective,” Trigmatic said. Upon his return to Ghana, he found himself more determined to create meaningful music, even though it led to the loss of deals with promoters and further strained relationships within his team. “I was seeing things differently, but the people around me still didn’t see it,” he noted. Despite the challenges, Trigmatic is committed to staying consistent in his new path, producing music that not only entertains but also informs and educates. His evolution highlights the often difficult but rewarding journey artists face when pursuing a deeper connection with their art and culture.
