Banking Sector Assets Surge by 38.7%

– A remarkable leap from 19.6% in 2023 – BoG

Story: By Isaac AIDOO, Accra

GHANA’S banking sector’s total assets have surged by an impressive 38.7%, as of August 2024, a remarkable leap from the 19.6% growth recorded in August 2023, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison, revealed in the BoG’s latest engagement with journalists in Accra.

According to the regulator, the robust asset expansion underscores the sector’s resilience and its ability to navigate economic challenges effectively.

Dr Addison stated that in terms of profitability, “banks in Ghana have experienced a noteworthy increase in both pre-tax and after-tax profits during the first eight months of 2024.”

He added, “this upward trend highlights the banking industry’s successful efforts to optimize operations and enhance income generation despite the ongoing economic uncertainties. The growing asset base has played a critical role in driving these profitability gains, as banks capitalize on increased lending and investment opportunities.”

Dr. Addison emphasized the importance of these financial indicators, stating that they reflect a broadly improving financial soundness within the banking sector. He noted that the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) stood at 10.3% in August 2024, significantly higher than the 7.5% recorded in the same month the previous year.

When accounting for relief measures, the CAR was reported at 13.8%, slightly down from 14.2% in August 2023, indicating that banks continue to maintain a healthy buffer against potential losses.

The improved liquidity and efficiency ratios during the first eight months of 2024 further illustrate the banking sector’s strengthened financial position. This enhanced stability is crucial for fostering confidence among depositors and investors, paving the way for sustained growth in the sector.

However, Dr. Addison also addressed the pressing issue of rising non-performing loans (NPLs), which increased to 24.3% in August 2024, up from 20.0% in August 2023.

This rise has primarily been attributed to defaults from large borrowers, underscoring the elevated credit risk that remains a significant concern for the sector’s future outlook.

The Governor urged banks to adopt prudent lending practices and strengthen their risk management frameworks to mitigate the potential impact of these challenges.

Ghana’s banking sector has demonstrated remarkable growth in assets and profitability over the past two years, reflecting its resilience in the face of economic pressures.

As the sector continues to expand, the Bank of Ghana is committed to supporting measures that enhance financial stability and encourage sustainable growth.  Dr. Addison’s insights provide a cautiously optimistic outlook, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance to navigate the complexities of the evolving economic landscape.
