Volta Police intercept ¢1m in fertiliser bags heading to Kumasi

The Volta Regional Police Command has intercepted a staggering GH¢1,021,700 in cash concealed in fertiliser sacks on a Ford Transit bus traveling from Ho to Kumasi. The operation took place around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, during a routine snap check at Juapong.
According to a police statement released on Wednesday, sixty-eight (68) bags—commonly used to package fertiliser—were found tightly packed with GH¢1 notes and coins. The entire consignment was hidden in the bus’s cargo area, in what investigators describe as an elaborate attempt to transport a large sum of money covertly.

The driver, identified as Edward Ansah, has been taken into custody and is currently assisting police with investigations. During preliminary questioning, Ansah reportedly said he was contracted by an unnamed individual based in Kumasi to deliver the money but failed to provide any documentation or credible explanation regarding the source of the funds.
“The nature of the concealment has raised suspicion, and thorough investigations have commenced to ascertain the source, ownership, and intended use of the money,” the police statement said.
The interception has sparked public interest and speculation about potential financial crimes, including money laundering or illicit financial transfers. However, police say it is too early to confirm any links to criminal enterprises.
The Volta Regional Police Command has assured the public that it will follow all leads and that findings from the investigation will be made known in due course. Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service is urging the public—especially transport operators—to report any suspicious financial transactions or requests involving large cash movements.
