TikTok: Cross-dressing sparks cultural debate
A RISING trend among male TikTok content creators in Ghana has sparked a cultural debate, with concerns being raised over the increasing popularity of cross-dressing on the platform.
The conversation took center stage following a recent event in Kumasi, where a few male influencers appeared at the Ridge Condos All Black Party dressed in women’s attire, complete with accessories, causing a stir both online and offline.
Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, Deputy Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), has expressed serious concerns over this development, describing it as a direct challenge to Ghana’s cultural values.
He criticized the growing trend, stating, “It is very disappointing that we continue to experience such behaviours that are an affront to our rich cultural values and norms.”
The event in Kumasi particularly drew his ire, as it occurred in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of Ghanaian tradition and home to the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
“What happened in Kumasi is a total disrespect to our Ghanaian culture and more directly an insult to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Manhyia, and all custodians of culture in the Ashanti Region and Ghana at large,” Dr. Fio added.
This incident has amplified the growing conversation about social media content creation and its intersection with Ghanaian cultural values. While TikTok and other platforms offer new spaces for creative expression, the rise of cross-dressing among male influencers has raised questions about how far creative liberties can go before they conflict with deeply held traditions. As more Ghanaian content creators push the boundaries of fashion and self-expression, cultural custodians like Dr. Fio are calling for a renewed commitment to preserving the nation’s rich heritage, even in the face of evolving trends.
