UK seeks closer EU ties, but Brexit reversal not on agenda
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has emphasized that the UK’s pursuit of a stronger relationship with the European Union does not signal a reversal of Brexit. Speaking alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Sir Keir reaffirmed that while the government seeks closer cooperation with Europe, there are no plans to re-enter the single market or customs union.
At a joint press conference, the Prime Minister discussed ongoing talks aimed at forging a new cooperation agreement between the UK and Germany. The proposed treaty, expected to be signed early next year, will cover various areas including trade, defense, energy security, and technology. The goal is to enhance economic growth, create jobs, and strengthen ties between the two nations.
The leaders also agreed on a joint action plan to combat illegal migration and smuggling networks by sharing intelligence and data. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address common security challenges.
Addressing the potential for improved trade deals with the EU, Sir Keir expressed his desire for a better agreement than the one negotiated by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2020. However, he clarified that this effort does not equate to undoing Brexit. “We are not looking to reverse Brexit or rejoin the single market or customs union,” Sir Keir stated. “Instead, we aim to establish a closer relationship in areas such as the economy, defense, and cultural exchanges.”
Regarding the possibility of a youth mobility scheme, which could allow young people from the EU and the UK to live and work in each other’s countries, Sir Keir confirmed that the UK currently has no plans to introduce such a program. While acknowledging the importance of fostering educational and cultural ties, he insisted that the discussions with Chancellor Scholz did not delve into the specifics of youth mobility. Sir Keir’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining Brexit while also seeking ways to enhance cooperation with European partners. As negotiations continue, the focus remains on balancing the UK’s post-Brexit sovereignty with the benefits of closer economic and strategic ties with the EU.
