GRA reassures business community of new approach to revenue mobilization

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has assured the business community of significant reforms in its revenue mobilization strategies, emphasizing a shift away from aggressive tax collection methods.
At a recent workshop in Accra for members of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Mr. Daniel Edisi, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of operations, outlined the GRA’s new, customer-focused approach. He stressed that the days of “Rambo-style” tax collection were over, with the Authority now prioritizing engagement and collaboration with taxpayers.
“Today’s GRA is centered on serving the customer,” Mr. Edisi stated. “We want to spread the message that without taxes, our nation cannot grow. We can’t fund our development or reduce our reliance on external loans, which are funded by the taxes of other countries’ citizens. It’s imperative that we all commit to paying our fair share.”
He further explained that the GRA is committed to educating the public on the importance of taxation and intends to use various channels to reach and engage citizens effectively. The workshop, he noted, was part of broader efforts to reposition the GRA as a development partner rather than a feared entity.
Participants in the workshop received comprehensive training on Ghana’s tax system, covering topics such as the legal framework, the GRA’s mandate and scope, taxpayer rights and obligations, as well as procedures for registration, filing, and payment. The session also addressed policy initiatives, personal tax relief, trade facilitation, and customs processes.
The workshop’s facilitators included Mr. Lawrence Hotsonyame, Assistant Commissioner of Training and Development; Chief Revenue Officer Edward Bagiyiri, Head of the Import and Export Unit; and Mr. Alphonse Quainoo, Assistant Commissioner of Training and Development, Customs. Through these reforms, the GRA aims to foster a cooperative relationship with taxpayers, encouraging voluntary compliance and ensuring that the business community views the Authority as a partner in national development.
