Prez. Mahama Orders Cancellation of Fuel Allocations and Allowances for Ministers, Govt Appointees

In a strong move to enforce fiscal discipline, Cabinet today, April 9, 2026, reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s directive requiring all ministers and senior government appointees to strictly comply with the cancellation of fuel allocations and allowances. The directive forms part of broader government cost-control measures aimed at promoting accountability and prudent use of public resources.
The announcement comes at a time when fuel prices in Ghana have come under renewed pressure, largely due to rising global crude oil prices driven by tensions in the Middle East. These increases have led to higher transport fares and a corresponding rise in the cost of goods and services, intensifying the burden on households and businesses.
Speaking on the matter, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the Cabinet’s decision signals the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while simultaneously protecting Ghanaians from the ripple effects of global oil price shocks. “Recent concerns from transport operators and consumers have heightened calls for government intervention. The cancellation of fuel allocations and allowances is a step towards ensuring responsible management of public funds,” he noted.
As part of the ongoing response to global energy pressures, Cabinet has also mandated the Ministers of Finance and Energy to remove selected fuel taxes and margins to reduce pump prices in the next pricing window. In parallel, the Minister for Transport has been tasked to expedite the deployment of 100 new Metro Mass Transit buses along high-traffic routes, with fares set lower than private operators, to ease transport costs for commuters.
Authorities expect the measures to provide temporary relief while closely monitoring international developments to determine the next course of action. Analysts have hailed the directive on fuel allocations and allowances as a necessary step to restore public confidence and reinforce government accountability in managing resources amid volatile economic conditions.
