By Isaac AIDOO, Accra

THE Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has introduced the Ghana Stats App, a cutting-edge mobile application designed to provide comprehensive district-level statistics based on the 2010 and 2021 Population and Housing Censuses.

Launched on August 20, 2024, this innovative tool aims to enhance data accessibility and empower policymakers, local authorities, and development partners with detailed insights to drive effective and targeted interventions across the country.

The Ghana Stats App offers users access to data for all 261 districts in Ghana, along with national and regional indicators, aligning with the country’s Vision 2057: Long-term National Development Perspective Framework.

This strategic vision seeks to elevate Ghana to upper middle-income status by improving living standards for all citizens. By focusing on key areas such as population management, health services, employment, poverty reduction, child welfare, and environmental sustainability, the app serves as a vital resource for tracking progress and identifying areas requiring attention.

One of the app’s most significant features is its ability to compare statistics from 2010 and 2021, providing a clear picture of how various indicators have evolved over time. Additionally, the app includes projections for district-level populations in 2024 and 2030, making it an indispensable tool for planning and resource allocation.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. Kwaku Appiah-Adu, Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Vice President, emphasized the government’s commitment to utilizing these valuable resources for sustainable development.

He highlighted the importance of disaggregated data in addressing the disparities and inequalities often masked by national-level statistics. According to Prof. Appiah-Adu, the detailed information provided by the Ghana Stats App will support more informed decision-making, promote inclusive growth, and facilitate the efficient allocation of resources.

Dr. Grace Bediako, Chairperson of the GSS Governing Board, underscored the significance of population data in shaping the nation’s future. She noted that the launch of the Ghana Stats App reflects the GSS’s dedication to making official statistics more accessible and useful for development planning at the sub-national level. Dr. Bediako also pointed out that the app aligns with global efforts to embrace the power of inclusive data to create a resilient and equitable future for all.

The Ghana Stats App is part of a broader initiative by the GSS to develop diverse statistical products that cater to the needs of various stakeholders. Complementing tools such as the GSS StatsBank and the Digital Census Atlas, the app is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Ghana’s national and international development goals. As Ghana moves toward achieving its Vision 2057 goals, the Ghana Stats App will serve as a critical resource for monitoring progress, guiding policy decisions, and ensuring that every citizen benefits from well-informed, data-driven initiatives.
